Effects of Various Etching Times on Shear Bond Strength of an Orthodontic Resin

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of various etching times on shear bond strength of bracket. Sound first premolars were embeded to resin block. Each group of teeth were etched with 38% phosphoric acid solution for 15, 30, 60, 120
seconds respectively. brackets were bonded to the teeth with chemically cured resin (Mono-Lok2). After bonding, shear bond strength was tested and enamel surfaces were examed with scanning electron microscope.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. Shear bond strength of each group for the given experimental etching times was not statistically different.
2. The predominant failure sites of bracket were the enamel-resin interface and resin itself. Enamel detachment occured in group of ething time more than 60 seconds.
3. This experiment indicated that proper etching time is in the range 15 to 30 seconds for proper shear bond strength and minimizing of enamel detachment
